Corundum is among the hardest minerals on earth — Mohs 9, second only to diamond, the same mineral family that gives the world its rubies and sapphires. The stone for this sculpture came from the Carnaíba Mountain Range in Bahia, Brazil, where the earth folds layers of ruby, emerald, sapphire, and zoisite into a single vein of impossible color.

Florinaldo Souza dos Santos — known throughout Brazil as Galego — spent years carving directly into a 600-kilogram block of this stone. He did not impose a figure onto the mineral. He listened for what was already inside it. What emerged was Ismael: bearded patriarch, first son of Ibrahim, ancestor of the Arab peoples, builder of the Kaaba. The face of a prophet, carved in the stone of the earth's own making.

Carved into its surface is not decoration but record: the Kaaba, the Dome of the Rock, the oasis of Zamzam, the mountains of Medina, the Great Mosque of Córdoba, the Burj Al Arab — a full map of where this civilization was born, spread, and arrived.
